A pair of new sunglasses is one of the quickest and easiest ways to kickstart your summer style.
Acetate and plastic sunglass frames that dazzle with colour are just the starting point for a bumper crop of new shades from such designers as Gucci, Vera Wang, Valentino and closer to home, Vancouver’s Derek Desierto, who designs the Derek Cardigan eyewear line for Clearlycontacts.ca.
High-voltage neon frames in eye-popping hues of orange, lime, red and fuchsia are also on call from Marc Jacobs, Matthew Williamson and a number of other designers while the trend toward laminates continues.
“Bright colours have filtered down from the fashion runways to eyewear frames. Two-tone laminate frames that combine two layers of material such as turquoise and olive, burgundy and orange and navy and olive offer ways to wear colourful frames without overwhelming your features,” says eyewear designer Corinne McCormack, who designs her own signature line of glasses and is a creative director for Foster Grant.
“Super bright and bold sunglasses are fun and tie in with summer’s trend toward brightly coloured clothing and accessories, but some may find softer-coloured sunglasses easier to wear,” notes Desierto.
These include translucent styles in glossy tones of pale blush brown, sheer grey, watermelon, olive and violet, all of which can brighten your outlook without overdoing it, if you’re already wearing colourful clothing and accessories.
Other sure hits include pastel sunglass frames in shades of lilac, mint, aqua, peach, candy pink, baby blue, turquoise and white.
With so much colour and visual interest in the frames, lenses are mostly tinted dark gray or brown but there are some exceptions.
“Purple to rose, and olive to amber tones of faded ombre gradient lenses lend a subtly fashionable twist to (sunglass) lenses,” says McCormack.
For those stuck on neutrals, cream and brown tortoiseshell frames appear in several shades and finishes.
Dark brown, amber brown and creamy blonde tortoiseshell and wood grain patterned frames look fresh and new in retro cat-eye styles and the oversized square and round shades popularized by ’60s style icons Jacqueline Onassis and Audrey Hepburn.
Oversized shades with sleek or wide temples and frames made of acetate and plastic are sometimes combined with metal to add textural interest.
“It’s difficult to pinpoint one specific frame shape as being most important “¦ as it often depends on a person’s face shape and style preference,” says Blake Mycoskie, the Los Angeles-based founder of TOMS. Well known for shoes, TOMS has just launched a sunglasses line in Canada.
The standard advice about square-shaped faces choosing round, elliptical and cat-eye sunglasses and round face shapes looking best in square and geometric sunglasses generally still holds true but if in doubt, a pair of aviators is likely to be a safe bet.
“The aviator (sunglasses) shape remains popular as it suits almost every face.” adds Mycoskie.

A police officer has quit amid allegations he stole sunglasses from Christchurch’s red zone.
A police spokesman said the officer resigned late last year after being investigated for theft in the aftermath of the February 2011 earthquake.
It was alleged three sets of sunglasses were taken from a cordoned suburban shop by the North Island constable.
Assistant Commissioner south Dave Cliff said the matter was investigated as soon as it was brought to police notice.
An inquiry was conducted by senior police investigators, and the constable was suspended once evidence of his involvement emerged.
He did not admit the theft of the sunglasses.
“We are very clear that any allegations against police must be investigated thoroughly and promptly,” Cliff said.
He said there was not enough legal evidence to prove a charge of theft.
“Fingerprint evidence was not able to be put to the court,” he said.
”Officers’ fingerprints are recorded for elimination purposes, but it is not lawful for these to be used for any other purpose.
”As a result, the decision was made, reluctantly, that charges could not be brought against the constable.”
Cliff said police then started a disciplinary process, which culminated in a disciplinary hearing.
The constable resigned before the process was finished.
“The officer was the subject of a full investigation and his police career is now over,” Cliff said.
He was satisfied the police had investigated the incident “promptly and fully”.
Cliff condemed the actions of the constable for tainting the efforts of other officers from New Zealand and overseas who helped in Christchurch.
He called it a “tragedy”.
“We demand the highest ethical standards from all police officers and police employees,” he said.

‘BESPOKETACLES’ It’s been a long time since wearing sunglasses was just about shading the eyes from the glare of the sun.
Just as often, that pair of Wayfarers, cat-eyes or aviators is used to create an air of inaccessibility and mystery. That’s especially true among the celebrity set seeking a disguise and rock musicians trying to cultivate an anti-establishment vibe behind impenetrably inky or mirrored lenses.
But, thanks to the latest celebri-trend — custom-made, lightly tinted lenses in light neutrals or pale pops of color — sunglasses are no longer an accessory that looks cool at the beach or behind the wheel but affected indoors and elsewhere.
It’s a subtle look, hard to notice at first. That is, unless the wearer is looking into the camera as Robert Downey Jr. did at the Oscars this year — showing off his gray-tinted glasses en route to the stage.
But once it’s brought to your attention, tinting can be seen everywhere.
The king of the custom-colored sunnies seems to be Downey. His eye-catching eyewear, each pair lightly custom-washed to a different tint, includes the Oliver Peoples Sheldrake frames with custom light-wash purple lenses he wore recently to “The Avengers” premiere.
Larry Leight, co-founder and creative director of Oliver Peoples, traces the demand for medium– to lighter-tinted lenses to Jack Nicholson. The actor has made disappearing behind sunglasses — the darker the better — part of his signature look for decades. But occasionally, when the TV cameras cut to Nicholson court-side at Lakers games, he’s wearing lenses so lightly colored his eyes can be seen following the action.
Although custom-tinted lenses have been an option for both prescription and non-prescription eyewear for years, an Oliver Peoples representative said the brand has noticed more of the famous faces they outfit requesting lighter versions to wear to high-profile events.
In addition to choosing the density of the dye job, Lissak says clients also specify the color from an extensive lens palette, often to match a particular outfit or accessory.
Vintage-inspired blue, green and rose washes are among the most popular.
Although bespoke spectacles (“bespoketacles”?) may sound like an extravagance, one needn’t be paparazzi-dodgingly wealthy to afford the option, which at Oliver Peoples starts at about $100.

This past weekend saw the official IVI Launch Party, the brand new line of badass sunglasses by Rob Dyrdek, Pete Fox and Jerome Mage, held at a private Beverly Hills home.
Skateboard and TV legend Rob Dyrdek – along with creative partners Pete Fox and Jerome Mage - presented the full collection of their brand new sunglass line, IVI, at a private residence in Beverly Hills.
The evening kicked off with a sunset performance by LA’s favorite girl rock band, BLEACHED. Personal friends of Rob stopped by to congratulate him on the line, including Brody Jenner and Ryan Schekler, as well as several notables of the extreme sports word like motor cross star, Josh Hansen (former beau to Stephanie Pratt.)
Guests partied into the the early hours of the morning while DJ Mom Jeans (Danny Masterson) spun, checking out the display cases of the new line stationed around the venue and enjoying an array of delicious catered food.
Reality star, Taylor Armstrong and actors Anton Yelchin and Michael Rosenblum were thrilled to get their own pair of sunglasses, before the line officially launches to the public on the IVIvision.com website. Dyrdek was overjoyed with the support from friends and guests and was seen giving high fives through out the evening celebrating the official launch.

New York, May 12 (ANI): Kris Humphries made fun of himself and his estranged wife Kim Kardashian‘s new beau, Kanye West, in a new video.
The Nets star appeared in a new Funny or Die video, in which two sports agents try to convince him to play up his bad reputation in the wake of his split from Kardashian after just 72 days of marriage, the New York Post reported.
Humphries wears Kanye West sunglasses in the Funny or Die video.
“I’m looking for new representation,” Humphries said, sitting in a chair in front of two agents at a “Second Rate Talent Management” company.
“Kris, let’s face facts-you are the most hated player in the NBA,” a male agent says.
A female agent adds, “Think Artest, Rodman. Sweetie, being hated is where the money is.”
After suggesting that Humphries face appear on toilet paper, and bringing in a dying basketball fan whose final wish was to tell off Humphries, the agents explain to the player that they want him to “take it up a notch.”
“It’s makeover time,” the male agent says.
Humphries traded in his cardigan sweater for a Ed Hardy-style T-shirt, and puts on a top hat. He also tried on the slotted sunglasses that Kanye West made famous.
“Those are the wrong sunglasses,” the female agent says. “We don’t want you to look like an asshole, we just want you to look like a douchebag.”
She also takes a swipe at West’s infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009.
“I have several awards ceremonies booked for you to spontaneously ruin,” the agent says, before getting in another dig on Artest, who changed his name to Metta World Peace last summer. “We’d also like you to change your name to Beta Fish World War III.”
In the end, Humphries decides to go his own way.
“Look guys, you don’t understand me,” he says, leaving the agents’ office. “I’m outta here. I’m going with grandma to the animal shelter.” (ANI)

Or he could keep continuing to improve as a solid if not spectacular power forward. Humphries has proven to be a reliable double-double guy, averaging a career-high 13.8 points and 11 rebounds per game this season.
When you add to that the fact that he occasionally placed his penis inside of this and, so far as anyone knows, didn’t contract VD, he’s got quite the impressive resume.
